A cover makes a promise

A magazine cover needs to communicate the publication’s identity at a glance. The strongest image is not always the most elaborate; it is the photograph that connects with the intended audience and leaves space for the masthead and cover lines.

Consider the crop early

A portrait may look excellent full-screen but lose its impact when cropped for a cover. Editors consider headroom, eye line, negative space and how the image works on mobile as well as in print. Shoot alternative compositions when possible.

Expression and connection

Eye contact can create immediacy, while a turned gaze may suggest narrative or mystery. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the issue’s creative direction and the tone of the magazine.

Typography is part of the image

Masthead placement, contrast and cover-line hierarchy influence image selection. Busy backgrounds can make type difficult to read. A useful cover test places real typography over candidate photographs rather than judging the photos alone.

Balance identity and surprise

Readers should recognise the publication, but each issue should bring a fresh perspective. A consistent design system allows editors to experiment with colour, styling and framing without losing brand recognition.

Clear rights before release

A cover requires suitable publication permissions, accurate credits and confirmation of any contractual restrictions. Digital promotion, paid advertising and print distribution may involve different usage rights. Resolve these details before announcing the cover.

Test the cover at thumbnail size

Place a draft masthead and realistic cover lines over several candidate images. Reduce the mock-up to phone-screen size: can the face, mood and publication name still be understood? Also test a version without text for social promotion. These checks reveal problems that are easy to miss when judging a photograph at full resolution.

Plan for more than one format

A digital cover may need portrait, square and landscape crops for the website, newsletters and social platforms. Ask the photographer for framing that leaves usable space around the subject without compromising the original composition. Confirm whether the licence covers those adaptations and any paid promotional use before publication.
